Better Creation of Characters (WIP, long version)
This is a topic that I have been wanting to do for a long time, but have put off for a while. So, now here it is.
This is a looong guide and would not be suitable for a template. It is pretty much just a long version of a guide I will post later which may or may not work as an alternative template.
This guide is best done with a group. Why? Read "What is a common character basis system?".
By the way, correct me if I'm wrong on anything.
It will go over...
- What a "common character basis system" is.
- How to properly create a character off of a basis.
- How to name a character.
NOTE: This guide is pretty much only about Humans, Cherubs, Trolls, and Felt (includes "Leprechauns" as well as others).
- What a good role for your character is.
- What eye color, blood color, cheek swirl color, or hat color is (glubbin' Homestuck with all these colors of body parts and what not) best suited for your character.
- How to make a good quirk.
- How to make a good exception character.
- How to have good STRENGTHS and weaknesses.
- How to make a good chum handle.

- What is a common character basis system?:
A common character basis system is what all the characters of a session are based off of. All canon sessions follow this, so it should be done by any respectable OC session. This is reflected by their planets, their eyes (for humans), where they live, their names, and often their personality. Your dancestor may have something based kind of off what yours are, "element" vs. "periodic element" of humans is the only thing I can name right now.
The beta humans follow elements
- John is "Wind". He is easy going.
- Rose is "Water" She flows? (I can't think of a good water pun that fits her)
- Dave is "Fire". He is hot-headed.
- Jade is "Earth" She is down to earth.
The alpha humans follow "the other" elements.
NOTE: I do not know enough about chemistry to tell you how they fit them really, but I can tell you that the noble gasses which do not bond well.
- Jane is "Helium"
- Roxy is "Neon"
- Dirk is "Krypton"
- Jake is "Xenon"
The beta trolls follow the zodiac more about the sign than the meaning. They are often even the exact opposite of the meaning of it.
NOTE" If you didn't know they were the zodiac, then facepalm.
- Aradia is "Aries". Aradia is the exact opposite of Aries. She is not very "strong-willed or spontaneous". She's not very fiery in personality. She doesn't have the best sense of humor. She also is anything, but impatient. This might've been different while she wasn't dead though.
- Tavros is "Tauros". Tavros is pretty much the opposite as well. He doesn't really stand his ground (pun fully intended), but not about his childish beliefs which is really against the strength of a bull. I highly believe that if he would abandon his beliefs, he could gain the confidence he dreams of (I'm scorpio btw, just thought you should know...).
- Sollux is "Gemini". He VERY much fits Gemini from what I know. Do I even need to explain the whole bifurcation thing? He's bipolar. He's computer oriented (binary). His entire fashion is based on two. Hell, his love of Aradia could've been due to the double letters in her chum handle.
- Karkat is "Cancer". He fits Cancer almost to a tee. He is "crabby". He is very conservative in his mood. He is a loyal and sympathetic friend when he needs to be, but this is often destroyed by his big ol' mouth.
- Nepeta is "Leo". She follows it quite a bit. Symbollically, she is a glubbin cat-girl. Meaningwise, she is mainly a Leo to Equius. She is bossy to him, and she is very vocal about why Equius can't get anybody else. Nobody else can stand him enough to get to know him. I'm not even going to state why she is cat-like in nature.
- Kanaya is "Virgo". I am literally going to copy-paste the meaning of Virgo.
"Virgo's have keen minds, and are delightful to chat with, often convincing others of outlandish tales with ease and charm. Virgo's are inquisitive and are very skilled at drawing information from people. This trait also makes them naturally intuitive. Combine this with their remarkable memories, and we see an advanced, analytical personality. However the Virgo needs balance in their lives otherwise they may become short-tempered, impatient and self-serving. Virgo's are excellent teammates in work and social activities. They work well with others, although they freely express their opinions (even when unwarranted)."
She is also very motherly which alludes to the Virgin Mary. She is also very kind for this reason. Her auspicious nature is very much akin to a mother stopping her kids from fighting.
- Terezi is "Libra". She follows it quite nicely. She is about JUSTICE! She goes to extremes to reach her goals (such as deciding her friend's fate over a
coin-flip). She has keen intuition, but doesn't give much credit to her sight and perception. Both puns were fully intended.
- Vriska is "Scorpio". She fits this well. She is misunderstood. Her personality is bold and she executes massive actions with confidence }:). She is quite secretive. Who knows what the hell she's up to. She also sees opposition as a healthy challenge.
- Equius is "Sagittarius". He does not follow this much, however he does fit it in other ways. He doesn't have a great ability for focus. He can be very intense and has a lot of power. He does waste energy (sweating). He doesn't make a comeback against incredible odds, instead he enjoys it. He does make a semi-loyal friend (think Aradia's heart and not killing the highblood).
- Gamzee is "Capricorn". He doesn't really fit it, but very much does, and I HIGHLY believe he fit it more once. Gamzee is quite philosophical about mOtHeRfUcKiN mIrAcLeS. He isn't that intelligent. He once tried to maintain stability, but then ran out of pie. He doesn't deal well with opposition or criticism, but a healthy or "sopor" capricorn shrugs it off. He takes on other people's problems often. They rarely share their problems, and dwell a lot on their problems. I believe that Gamzee was piles and piles of explosive problems, and the ICP video was just the spark. He is also quite capricious (def: given to sudden and unaccountable changes of mood or behavior.) in nature.
- Eridan is "Aquarius". He is a little like his zodiac. He is often HILARIOUSLY unlike his zodiac. His methods are unorthodox. He is not simple. He is not quiet. He is not a humanitarian. He is quite honest and loyal. He is not prone to sloth. He knows very much about his problems.
- Feferi is "Pisces". She is quite unlike and quite like her zodiac. She isn't that low profile. She isn't that honest to herself about her love of life. She is unshellfish. She is gullible. She also was not the victor of ill circumstance.
The Alpha Trolls follow common human personalities, mainly internet personalities. Some of them are also like 50's personalities. This contrasts with the astrological personalities.
- Damara is a "Teenage Delinquit". She is horny. She is crude. She backlashes quite hard when she doesn't get her way.
- Rufioh is "otaku" and a "kid who doesn't grow up". He holds onto old beliefs of his whilst trying to grasp onto otaku beliefs. He is also pretty much Rufio made into a character.
- Mituna is the "kid who nobody believes". No matter what he said, it meant literally nothing, because most didn't take him seriously. If you want to be cold about it, he is also the "mentally challenged kid".
- Kankri is a "Social justice warrior". She fights for things nobody really cares for all that much. She is also very easily angered. #s9rry if I triggered y9u.
- Meulin is a "fandom blogger". She is prone to emotion and she is all about setting people up together, mainly redrom.
- Porrim is an "alternative fashion" expert and "sex-positive feminist". She is also a motherly figure who believes in tough love.
- Latula is a "90's skater girl". She desires attention pretty much and is rad.
- Horuss is "pretty much Equius". He is polite. He tends to unsettle others with his interests. However he tries to be more optimistic, however "TRIES" is the keyword here.
- Kurloz is "pretty much opposite Gamzee". His motivations and allegiances are very much known.
- Cronus is an "otherkin" and a "greaser". He is a "douchebag" according to Meenah, as well. Also "mega-Eridan" would fit him as well. He is a flirt as well as other attempts to gain attention. He doesn't treat people well. He is a "nice guy" who desires stuff from being a "nice guy".
- Meenah is "???". I don't know. She is aggresive. She is sarcastic.
The Alpha Trolls may also just be a cycling of Beta personalities.
The (Alpha) Cherub Session is passive vs. aggresive. Yin and Yang. Opposites pretty much. Note however that passive vs. aggressive does not necessarily mean good or evil. For example, Karkat is quite aggressive but he is not evil. Meanwhile, Vriska is more passive, but a lot of people would call her evil (or at least a huge biiiiiiiitch).
- Caliborn is the aggresive. He is everything aggresive in a person.
- Calliope is the passive. She is everything passive in a person.
Felt are based off of the lord (or muse's) aspect or the opposite. They might also be based off of number. They tend to be less based on a personality, than a power.
-Lrd English dominates time.
- The "cue ball" has (almost) omniscience over time.
- Ichi is "full of time". He is high-strung and tense as if he is on heavy drugs or something.
- Doze is "empty of time". He is slothy and sleepy.
- Trace is a "follower of time". He basically acts like a shark.
- Clover is a "lucky man of time". He has extreme luck. I have no idea how he has anything to do with time. (might tie in with light?)
- Fin is a "followed person of time". He basically acts like an anti-shark going backwards instead of forward,
- Die is a "manipulator of space based on time".
- Crowbar is a "destroyer of time".
- Snowman is the "vessel of time". When destroyed, the universe dies pretty much.
- Stitch is a "tailor of time". He can also manipulate time.
- Sawbuck is "saved by time".
- Matchsticks can "manipulate his position through space".
- Eggs is a "causer of time". He in effect can "continue" time.
- Biscuits is a "uncauser of time". He can halt time.
- Quarters is a "luck causer of time". He can cause time and space to change for others through pure chance.
- Cans is a "brute of time". He punches so hard, that you are transported through time.
Now, how does your group decide what your "character basis system" is?
Humans tend to be based on elements periodic and otherwise. Although I guess anything would do as well.
Trolls tend to be based off of extremes of human emotions and personalities.
Cherubs tend to be based off of two VERY conflicting emotions, if not just passive vs. aggressive.
Leprecauns are just based off the aspect.- example system for humans:
What would make a good system for humans?
- Humans tend to be in four (although you don't require four).
- Humans are pretty much based on objects and the like.
Since I want to choose something that nobody will really use I will choose times of the day. So, night, morning, afternoon and dawn for my character basis system. see other human creation stuff for more depth
- example system for trolls:
What would make a good system for trolls?
- Trolls tend to be in twelve (though you don't require twelve)
- Trolls are based on human emotions that come from objects, symbols, etc.
Since I want to choose something that nobody will really use I will choose school subjects. So, they will be English, Math, Art, Music, Government, Economics, Programming, Physics, Gym, Drama, Culinary, and Psychology.
- example system for cherubs:
What would make a good system for cherubs?
- Cherubs ARE in two and are aggressive and passive.
- example system for Felt:
What would make a good system for a doomed session?
- A number from four to seventeen is good for felt.
- The Felt are based on an aspect.
I'll try to pick a less often used aspect. Blood.
- how to make a character off of this:
So, you have a character basis system now? (if not, make one)
You should take different aspects from your thing and combine them into a personality. You can also take and add extra ideas to better create this character. Remember, your character should have a three-dimensional personality.
What do I mean by a three-dimensional personality?
A three-dimensional character has a complex personality that helps to thrust the story.
Questions to ask to make sure your character is three-dimensional:
- Can I describe my entire character with one sentence? For example, you could loosely describe Vriska with "bluh blugh huge biiiiiiiitch.", but you know that doesn't describe all of Vriska.
- Would my character's personality affect others?
- Will my character change in different situations?
Now that we're done with the "ground-rules" let's make characters.- Human example:
Our character basis system for humans is time of day.
So, I will make a character based off of night.
What do we know about night?
1.) It's dark.
2.) It's romantic to some. Imagine a kiss under the moonlight.
3.) It's scary to some. Imagine a Friday the 13th movie.
4.) People are typically sleepy or sleeping.
What do we know about night owls?
1.) They tend to be reclusive during the day.
2.) They seem to have more free time than other people.
3.) They probably have trouble sleeping.
Okay, so you're probably confused. You may be asking"What the hell does romance have to do with horror?", "So, what does this mean to me?"
Well, with this I could come up with...
X is a romantic who due to being a recluse comes off as off-putting to those who do not understand him well. He most likely further damages himself through liking dark things so this is worsened. He has more time so he obsesses over this. This causes him to lose sleep.
I can't really describe him with one sentence. His personality would affect others. He also is able to change
- Troll example:
Our character basis system for trolls is school subjects.
For this example, I will do a troll based off of music.
What do we know about music?
- People like music. Find a single person that doesn't like music.
- Music has rhythm.
- Old music is better.
What do we know about musicians? Rock stars in particular.
- They want freedom.
- They want glory.
- They are childlike.
- Most musicians fail.
X is a rebel who wishes to have freedom and glory. His childlike nature is respected by a lot of people. Though the one thing that he doesn't quite grasp is that he will never succeed in being what he wants to be. He simply moves with the flow when a problem comes at him, so he just keeps piling on problems. He actively sabotages himself. He also likes the way older things are always striving for the way things were. But he can never quite achieve it.
- Cherub example:
Pretty much Caliborn and Calliope.
