I have heard several people make the distinction, and although I love it I agree, that Undertale is actually not that great of a game. What it is is a great *story*, one that you get to control like a game. It's fantastic and wonderful and amazing and it changed me forever, but coming from someone who has beaten dark souls, it's not really a mechanically good "game".

story is sorta part of a game.
it wasn't really advertised as mechancally good, so it is fine as a game

Besides, the gameplay it offers is functional as fuck. Which is pretty amazing seeing as they still managed to be fairly creative and fresh with it. Much like Dark Souls; the gameplay it offers, while not particularly unique or original, is well tailored to the game's theme and story.

So yeah, really good game.
