Afterstuck Re-Reading Group Heap (Intro/Interestcheck/Etc.)
(Thank you for the new area thing <3 <3 <3)
((<3 <3 <3 All the love-hearts, ALL of them <3 <3 <3))
So, basically, this is going to be a reading group that is going to re-read Homestuck after it finishes.
Gog, I suck at intros.
To put this into prosaic utilitarian-ly unartistic-ly dull terms, we're going to read a couple pages (or something) every couple days (or something) and talk about it.
Anybody up for this?

Sure id be up to it as long as we don't have to write a research paper when we are done!

Re: Afterstuck Re-Reading Group Heap (Intro/Interestcheck/Etc.)
It might be a year or more before it finishes. Then again, 4/13 is coming up in just a couple months. Hopefully the latter.
I'm in. I'd recommend either chunking it out ahead of time or reading around 20-50 pages per day. It's a big comic - around 8000 pages right now. 50 pages a day is 160 days total, or about 5.5 months.
If we read a constant number of pages every day, some of those days will be short, just reading some description of john's house or a series of zooming-out images. Some will be long, including two [S] flashes and a game that could take 2 or so hours to explore fully. In the middle will be conversations, which can vary from 1 to 15 minutes per page depending on your reading speed and which conversation it is.
If we chunk it out ahead of time, doing like 50 pages on the slow days and only 2 to 5 on the days in which long events happen, we could spend a more consistent amount of time per day across 8 or 9 months. It's going to be a long commitment either way.
I'd like to spend 45 minutes to an hour each day on it, and also have more than a week after it's over before we restart. That'll allow the internet some time to explode. We might get some more popularity then as well.

Hmm... I'mma use science (and lovehearts and trains) to find a way.
100 wpm is half the speed of the average reader. So we'll use that to judge how long a post is. We can use the lengths of the flashes to judge how long it takes to watch them. We can then add in some leeway. From there, we can try 5 hours each 7 day week.

Re: Afterstuck Re-Reading Group Heap (Intro/Interestcheck/Etc.)
From the MSPA statistics page, which is apparently reasonably up-to-date:
"Homestuck is about 84% of MSPA: 2508 days, 7955 pages, 14691 panels, 812424 words (162 [S]s, 3h38m44s)"
I dunno if that includes the games, or how it measures them if it does. Assuming it does (somehow), that leaves us:
~8000 pages of 5 second transition time (clicking, loading, depends on computer specs)
~15000 panels of 2 second visual appreciation time (depends on how much you care)
~800000 words of 60seconds/100words read time (depends on reading speed)
~3 hours, 40 minutes of Flash watch time (static, assuming you watch them all the way through, plus some load time which I won't count)
=40,000+30,000+480,000+10,800+2,400= 563,200 seconds/3600 = 156.4 hours. An hour per day is still 5 or so months. 5 hours per 7 days makes it 7 or so months.
This isn't entirely accurate, but I think aiming to finish it in about 6 months is a good start.

I admire your use of math in everyday life. You make my cry a single tear of black liquid numbers.

This is STILL a thing btw. Two weeks after the epilogue (if there is one), we will begin.
I'm sure somebody can math how long this will take us. I'd still assume 6 months-ish is doable.

Re: Afterstuck Re-Reading Group Heap (Intro/Interestcheck/Etc.)
I think about six months is doable. I think we'll probably just say "and then be done with page 2431 by next Friday" every week, and then have discussion about the previous week's stuff.
Do we want to wait until after the epilogue to start? We could start pretty soon here, and then just roll the epilogue in when it happens. On the other hand, the epilogue might give us more questions that we want answered by the reread, and if it's gonna be several months until it comes out, we might have already reread wahtever relevant information there is.
I'd rather start 2 weeks from now than 2 weeks from the epilogue. I will abide by majority, however.

Re: Afterstuck Re-Reading Group Heap (Intro/Interestcheck/Etc.)
Alright then, we can do the "finish page whatever by next Friday" thing.
I am quite hesitant to start before the epilogue, because who even knows what madness will be there? (Hint: Nobody. Maybe not even the huss of lips.)
I. however. don't want to put this off until the next 4/13. I would say that unless any news happens that has to do with it coming out soon, 3 weeks after it. So, I would say start it May 5th?

Re: Afterstuck Re-Reading Group Heap (Intro/Interestcheck/Etc.)
Here it is, May 5th already. That means we're going to start the re-read! (soon). What do you guys think we should do for the discussion system?
Examples:
A: week 1: read pages 1901 to 2000. Discuss nothing.
week 2: read pages 2001-2100. Discuss pages 1901-2000.
B: week 1: read pages 1901 to 2000. Discuss pages 1901-2000.
week 2: read pages 2001-2100. Discuss pages 2001-2100, as you read it.
C: day 1: read pages 1901 to 1915. Discuss pages 1901-1915.
day 2: read pages 1916 to 1930. Discuss pages 1916-1930, as you read it.
D: week 1: Recommended reading pages 1901 to 2000. Open discussion of the entire comic.
week 2: recommended reading pages 2000 to 2100. Open discussion of the entire comic.
If you would like to do something other than these options, please post it. I don't want to take control, just prod us toward moving forward.
I, personally, would prefer A or B. A gives us the entire week to read the chunk, and that way we're all on roughly the same page as far as discussion goes. If we do B, we can discuss as we read, if we see something interesting we mention it immediately, but others might still be 80 pages behind, so discussion would only involve as many people as are on exactly the same page. C is closer discussion, but tighter deadlines, and D could get off-topic really fast.

Re: Afterstuck Re-Reading Group Heap (Intro/Interestcheck/Etc.)
I would prefer A personally, but I would like to discuss some of the flaws of them that would be why I would dislike them.
A, B, D: Weeks are long.
C: Days are short.
Perhaps a three day thing? Perhaps a five day thing?
B: Vev already said what I don't like about B.
C: I don't REALLY see a problem with tight deadlines, but I would also like to propose an E based off C, just so we have the choice as well.
Day 1: Read pages.
Day 2: Read pages (if you didn't yesterday) and discuss.
15 pages is a small amount. I am pretty sure you were just listing numbers for example, but still, wanted to put that out there.
D: Chaotic. Just plain chaotic. Well, wouldn't be as chaotic if the group was monitored.
I will actually make a poll for this. This poll however will not be a flat-out one or another.
And I would suggest one or both of these for the poll:
- You will be able to vote multiple choice.
- The choices (plural) will both be open.

Re: Afterstuck Re-Reading Group Heap (Intro/Interestcheck/Etc.)
Alright, let's get this cracking. The current goal is to have read through page 2114 (Rose's intro) by the end of Tuesday, May 10th, with the goal of discussing those first 113 pages on Wednesday, May 11th. See you then.

Re: Afterstuck Re-Reading Group Heap (Intro/Interestcheck/Etc.)
First of all, on this whole schedule thing, May 12th can be used to discuss things from May 11th.
The schedule basically goes:
- Read (and discuss from yesterday)
- Discuss (and read if you need to)
- Read (and discuss from yesterday)
- Discuss (and read if you need to)
- Read (and discuss from yesterday)
- Discuss (and read if you need to)
Everybody should be done reading to page 2209 (Dave intro) by the end of 5/12 (Thursday). 5/13 will be the discussion for "the Rose arc" (95 pages).
---
As for discussion... since this is towards the very beginning, there isn't much to talk about really.
Asbestos causes cancer. Coincidence, I know.
Note Came True. Nuff said.
This is a thing btw. Johnnasprite would have been interesting. XD
((I technically posted this on 5/11))

It doesn't burn as quickly as you hoped. Each GAMEBRO MAGAZINE is guaranteed to be printed on 40% recycled asbestos. |

Re: Afterstuck Re-Reading Group Heap (Intro/Interestcheck/Etc.)
It has been said that Hussie completely forgot what the mechanics of sprites were in order to create the sprite^2, due to this. It's also said that he knew but changed his mind, because this was early, and it's also said that the situations are different. Maybe it has to be deliberate, extended touching? Maybe they have to know the possibility of prototyping exists? I personally just think Hussie guffed with the sprite^2.They were gimmicky and the gimmick was not useful. Maybe they'd've made more of an impact if the comic was longer. As is, they weren't smarter, more powerful, or more influencing, only more colorful.
Also, I just got hired, so I might not be able to read every other day. I'll catch up on my days off, though. Are other people rereading as well, and just have nothing to say?

Re: Afterstuck Re-Reading Group Heap (Intro/Interestcheck/Etc.)
I am re-reading, but because we're at the very beginning and i am an uncreative prick, i can't think of anything meaningful to talk about. Or to say anything about these sprites^2 in that matter. They're just stupid.
since 5/14 should be a reading day (If i undestand the schedule right) what is the next set of pages ?

5/14 was a reading day (but you can also catch up today perhaps), but 2339 seems like a good place to reach.
5/16 will be 2446
5/18 will be 2551
5/20 will be 2658
