One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Hedge
This is the detailed account of █████’s life up until the point of conversion to an entity formally known as a changeling. Our account starts on a cool summers night in the year 1871, there is a court case in session, a homely maiden is accused of a murder most peculiar, she just walked into his home and killed him for no reason what so ever. She pleaded that she was no murderer, and feigned insanity, which wouldn’t work normally, but, the judge’s pockets were so heavy that evening, and lined with the finest bribe. This maiden in particular, from this point referred to as March, she defiantly had friends, friends in the highest ivory towers, and the lowest pits of London. So she was given a light sentence, and gladly accepted, not knowing the path she had chosen for herself.
The London Asylum for the Insane was a pretty nice place actually, only very recently opened in 1870; it had all the bells and whistles you would expect of a practically dark age institution, okay maybe it wasn’t that bad. Either way, the orderlies were quite suspect of this new addition to their ward. She defiantly seemed insane, but it came off insincere somehow, her eyes too knowing, the way she grinned when she thought no one was looking. She claimed the medicine was just working. She had a great many visitors, from her very large ‘Family’ of sorts, but never the same person twice.
During a routine exam, she suddenly went berserk, and killed several of the nurses on her way towards freedom, all because, the entrance was left open for some odd reason, an opportunist by nature she rushed to snare her escape, only, to be dumbfounded by what she found, she was no longer in London, but, still on the grounds of an even larger asylum. But there were rabbits everywhere, with antlers, and three full moons in the sky. A voice proclaimed her sickness, and grabbed her by the antler. Antler? That wasn’t normally there. She felt her bones snap and stretch into a new form, she had become a jackalope along with the others.
The next few years were vague and hard to remember, alien tortures and treatments, scraps of memories, fragments of emotions. The moons were an ever present part of those pieces she could recall, time flowed like molasses one day and like oil the next. One particularly intact memory went like such: She was strapped to a table, and a man, or maybe a woman, wearing surgical gear she didn’t recognize approached with a hand drill, jabbing it into one eye, and then the next. She couldn’t see for a long time, but, eventually, a good feeling overcame her, and she opened up her eyes to more than her surroundings. This world, it was such a wonderful place, so many adventures to have, such chaos to reap, and she could feel how proud her doctors were, such a success after so many failures. And they did have fun didn’t they? She would be sent out to murder and main anyone that her doctor wanted; Shall we take a moment to appreciate the doctor? It was lagomorphic, with great antlers, and went by the name Caerbannog. It had galaxies for eyes and excessively large moth wings that trailed like a king’s cape.
Over time, the doctor moved on from March, bored with her after a time, for he was a fickle being, and a great boredom took to her, and she decided to leave. She was not well watched over, as her loyalty had never come to question before, or maybe perhaps, she was just allowed to leave, to spread the doctor’s chaos into the human world. Either way, the front gate was just open one day, and that was that, she ran into the hedge, slowly reclaiming her humanity with each thump of her rabbit legs, but the madness of the moon was forever burned into her mind. She found herself in a very familiar area.

Playing Fetch
She wandered mostly aimlessly, confusion had hooked into her still, and cuts and tears from the hedge decorated her body. She started to make her way back to her home, no clue that time had passed, or that she had been replaced. No one seemed to notice her antlers or long ears, so after a time, she assumed they were hidden from sight, her neighbors seemed to recognize her fine, as if she hadn’t been gone, but, she had, there was the asylum, and then The Asylum, time must have passed here.
Meanwhile, a woman currently going by Dorothy, that was her alias to her neighbors at least, was getting rather annoyed; none of her usual partners were available for what was obviously a two man job, and she was on a deadline. If she didn’t get someone to help in the next two hours, she was out a lot of money, and a lot more respect. Suddenly, the door opened.
In singular confusion, the two girls looked at a not quite right mirror of themselves, truth be told neither was quite like the original anymore, a distorted shadow and a distorted shadow dropper. Then, in singular violence they lunged at the doppelganger, shouting curses and threats to reveal their true form, after a bit of hair pulling they decide to talk it out. Each explaining their own story, and come to an agreement. Why replace when you can reinforce? So, as a trial run, they do that two man, or woman in this case, job, to great success, they had wanted a sister growing up anyway, so it worked out fine enough, they both also had a great longing for someone to confide in, and who better, than yourself? They split the money 50/50, because they could do twice the jobs now anyway, and, even better, take on the bigger jobs practically solo. They became quite a duo over night.
