Steven Universe

Seems that there's a lot of overlap between the Homestuck fandom and the Steven Universe fandom. I really like the images I see on tumblr of the various troll gemsonas myself. How many of you are Steven Universe fans too? Do you have a gemsona?

Steven Universe is my drug. My friend however (whom I introduced to homestuck) is... Lets just say she created a video of the camera slowly getting closer to lapris while Whitney houston was playing. It ending with a black screen saying "Rip lapris. A true American hero".

I found out about this show through the homestuck fandom. I was at first put off because of how much people were raving about it. After watching it though I have to admit that its not bad. Some of the episodes do a pretty good job, and the characterization is way better than I thought it would be for a kids show.
I would say skip the first ten or so episodes and get yourself started on Giant Woman or Steven the Swordfighter.

I love Steven Universe so much it's epic sauce. I like the amazing balance between the lay backness aspect. But I also love the development and the actual story. I have 2 gemsonas that are awesome. I recommend not skipping any episode since other episodes later may not make as much sense as it should.

Yep, I agree with that. Don't skip anything, because even the silly episodes have something deep in them.

I adore steven universe! I've been playing around with a few gemsonas. Also imagining trolls as gems is a blast. I've seen a few great headcanons of them over at tumblr.

I dont understand the appeal of Trolls as gems. They are completely different races, much closer to humans than gems. Whys it a thing?
If you are attracted to cool gem powers I guess? but most of the Trolls we know are Suburb players and already have powers or the potential for powers superior to those of Gems.

It has been noted before however that the gems seem to fit well into the homestuck classpects. so there is that, though it doesn't really have anything to do with Trolls.

It's a novel AU idea. Gems and Trolls both have abilities and weapons that are unique to the individual so I think that's where a lot of the parallels are drawn. That in addition to the blood colors and color themes inspiring the gems for each character make different interpretations fun to explore. Plus, by having such a setting it can bring the characters together in a way that doesn't involve the destruction of planets. Having it be a crossover would also be a fun idea. At the end of the day it's just a fun way to bring together two amazing fandoms.

I guess, if you can call psychic power unique abilities. Under the Suburb system Humans have their own powers though. Also you can always write fics that either ignore Suburb, or are set in the universe created after victory.

Also I guess it would be interesting in a different way, since when you have two races that are so equally matched with each other like the Humans and Trolls, it would be fun to see them interact with a more abstract race with fewer members but more blatant powers available to all of its members. The Trolls seem to be unused to interacting with aliens like the humans who can compete with them, it would be very interesting to see them have to deal with aliens that in many ways are superior to them, and maybe have to turn to the humans for help. But this possibility would seem to be lost when you turned the Trolls into Gems.

Also I have been wondering for a while when the seeming population difference between organic races and gems is going to get talked about :P
I think that might be why Steven is important, because he has the powers of a gem, but did not need to develop for thousands of years in order to get them because of his human side. Thats a fairly huge development.

It's quite a lot to think about, when you really get into it.

Well, the gems have no real physical form. So those Troll Gemsonas could just be Gems who are hiding within Troll culture, as either spies or people trying to live off of homeworld.

So they picked a conquest hungry genocidal alien culture to hide in.

This really only works if they are hiding in Beforan culture (they probably would not even have to hide there) or are trying to subvert the Alternian Empire from within (which is not something people on the run would be doing, so, only spies really)
This is why humans work much better than Trolls for gem interactions, and really most interactions of any kind. We are not dominated by either a totalitarian nightmare state or a smothering utopian collective, so with humans the need to hide is still there to some degree, but the potential for peaceful interaction with people who aren't also fugitives is as well.

That seems like a gross generalization. We have seen that home world gems are extremely aggressive beings that put the wants of their own leadership above others. And also, we have seen that Alternian culture is not as close knit as human culture. Where as human will congregate in large communism groups, Alternian trolls will infact distance themselves when able. In steven universe, the gems are quite obviously not humans in the eyes of the townsfolk due to an extended period of time and their open use of their powers. On alternia however, they are quite likely to find a secluded area no matter where they choose to reside, possess abilities that can easily be passed off as technology or psionics, possess the ability to adapt to the hemospectrum to discourage investigation, and if all else fails they can simply shapeshift into a Lusus creature to lose any suspicion.

Also yeah, I could see home world setting up spies on alternia for when they want to destroy a likely rival empire
