They'd have to start on the planet, probably before the events of the main canon session begin. This way we have a little time to introduce the characters before the meteors begin to fall. They manage to get off the planet before its destroyed and then the stuff with them actually getting their own side session begins. When I say they don't go onto planets I mean as in land of - and - planets, such places would be distorted areas on the ship. The session would be completely warping reality giving them a near Tardis level of space inside the ship, for example one section could be large enough to contain a city once you're inside it, but from the outside its still just one room and would only take minutes to go around compared to the hours it takes to go through.

i agree with the tardis idea, it was the one i had in mind

but instead of "guys running away from doom" i was thinking in the "looking at the destruction powerless"

like they were on space in their spaceship waching the meteors destroy everything they know

Well that'll still happen, it just gives us time to introduce them on the planet. If everything happens in space it won't seem as varied and we won't be able to explore what each character does as much. Escaping through the chaos and watching the world destroyed as they escape seems more interesting than just looking out the window and noticing its gone.
